Ava B. - Educator
[Name changed at request of participant]
I am a senior at a vocational school that has a childcare program, that I have been a part of for four years. I work with ages two to five. I started working as an educator because I recognize the necessity and importance of early childhood education and care. The initial learning years for children are what set the ground for further learning opportunities. The biggest obstacle is the lack of appreciation for early childcare educators. Working with multiple children that require a variety of learning methods and styles, and continuing to engage all children can be challenging. Regarding the system, childcare workers deserve to be paid at a higher rate. We teach the young generation that will eventually be the adults and leaders of the nation, and our abilities and efforts should be recognized.
How has the COVID-19 crisis affected you as an educator? What are you concerned about as the childcare system reopens?
I believe that children are not receiving the education they need during the pandemic. They are not able to work with manipulatives that encourage deeper thinking and knowledge. They are not getting one on one time that some may need.
